Remembering Johannes Doerfert

As you may have seen already on the LLVM blog or elsewhere, there is the tragic news that long-time LLVM contributor Johannes Doerfert passed away after a battle with cancer. The LLVM project blog has a tribute to his contributions to LLVM. He will be sorely missed. You can share memories of working with Johannes on his memorial page. In lieu of flowers, his family has asked that those who wish to honor his memory consider a donation to the LLVM Foundation, which you can do via that same page (a donor has agreed to match up to $50,000 in gifts made in his memory).

On the forums

• Hood Chatham posted an RFC on supporting Wasm externref pointers, globals, and arrays in Clang and LLVM.

• LLVM Foundation Board minutes are now available from June and from August.

• Nazar Mokrynskyi proposed adding a RISC-V target optimised for interpreted execution.

• LLVM 23.1.2 was released.

• Matt Arsenault proposes fixing usage of CMAKE_SYSTEM_NAME in cross-compiled runtimes builds, noting challenges curently between CMake’s system naming scheme as the ones used in the runtimes build.

LLVM commits

• bitinsert and bitextract operations were added to LLVM IR. 8ccb182.

• The SPIR-V backend learned to emit DebugValue. 3eecc40.

• LoongArch gained a PseudoAddUpperImm pass to deduplicate stack-frame base address materialisation. 5e9e32d.

• Libxml2 is now built from source in the release LLVM build. 5ae71ec.

• Control-flow hoisting support was removed from loop invariant code motion. 80a1eaf.

• The RISC-V backend gained support for getJumpTableIndex. 34d9eab.

• The llvm.vector.repeate intrinsic was added. a631bc1.

Clang commits

• New alpha.webkit.UnborrowedLocalVarsChecker, alpha.webkit.UnborrowedLocalVarsChecker, and alpha.webkit.UnborrowedLambdaCapturesChecker checkers were added. 081cc09, 162edfe, 051daff.

• clang-repl now supports wasm64 execution. 1833848.

Other project commits

• Flang now supports -finit-local= to initialise automatic variables. 45bc3fb.

• Flang docs now use the Furo theme, following most other LLVM subprojects that have moved over. 3dbc42d.

• Amongst lots of other additions this week, clone was implemented in LLVM’s libc. 2dea059.

• A compact bounded iterator was added to libcxx. d0dc3b0.

• minimumnumf and maximumnumf operations were added ot the MLIR arith dialect. 8306f77.
